Yangtze River Delta region pilots flexible inter-province power transmission to improve power supply reliability

August 28, 2024

Abstract : The flexible interconnection devices for inter-provincial power distribution network installed near the junction of Wujiang District of east China's Jiangsu Province and Jiashan County of Zhejiang Province have facilitated "no-time-difference" inter-provincial power transmission and improved power supply reliability.

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The flexible interconnection devices for inter-provincial power distribution network installed near the junction of Wujiang District of east China's Jiangsu Province and Jiashan County of Zhejiang Province have facilitated "no-time-difference" inter-provincial power transmission and improved power supply reliability.

As a pilot application by State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Company in the demonstration zone of green and integrated ecological development of the Yangtze River Delta, the flexible interconnection technology device is a set of AC/DC conversion equipment with a power capacity of 5,000 kilowatts, featuring functions such as load balancing and auto fault correction, capable of achieving millisecond-level inter-provincial mutual aid.

It is learned that power distribution network is managed locally which means no interconnection between two given provinces. This makes inter-province "power assistance" impossible when a power failure or insufficient supply occurs.

In recent years, the demonstration zone of green and integrated ecological development of the Yangtze River Delta has advanced the inter-provincial power distribution interconnection project and seen improved inter-province power assistance in the demonstration area.

But inter-provincial power transmission still requires the temporary electricity shut-down on one side due to voltage differences thus affecting residents and businesses in the surrounding areas, according to Shen Zhilong from State Grid Suzhou Wujiang District power supply company.

The flexible interconnection device is like a 'safety valve' which can connect the power distribution networks of the two provinces in a friendly manner, noted Shen.

Next, the flexible interconnection technology will be promoted in more areas in the Yangtze River Delta region, according to Wu Cheng, deputy director with Wujiang District Yangtze River Delta cooperation and development office. (Edited by Niu Huizhe with Xinhua Silk Road, niuhuizhe@xinhua.org)
