BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Since the beginning of this year, cross-border passengers and freight transportation of the China-Laos Railway has maintained robust growth, said Kunming Customs on Wednesday.

The China-Laos Railway had handled over 3.02 million tonnes of import and export goods as of Monday, up 29.1 percent year on year, statistics showed.

The transported cargo valued nearly 10.2 billion yuan, marking a remarkable year-on-year increase of 61.9 percent.

During the same period, the China-Laos Railway, which launched its international passenger service on April 13, 2023, has transported over 126,700 cross-border passengers.

In the first half of this year, fruit surpassed iron ore to become the largest category of imported goods into China via the China-Laos Railway, while mechanical and electrical products and monocrystalline silicon wafers have become the main export commodities from China.

The China-Laos Railway has transported more than 100,000 tonnes of fruits this year as of July 11, an increase of around 120 percent year on year, local railway authorities said.

As a landmark project of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, the 1,035-km China-Laos Railway connects Kunming, capital of China's Yunnan Province, with the Laotian capital Vientiane. It started operation in December 2021.
