BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Zhenjiang Power Supply Company has recently joined hands with local public welfare organizations to carry out electrification transformation of the kitchens of five old-age care facilities in Zhenjiang, east China's Jiangsu Province, building a safe and efficient cooking environment and facilitating meals for the elderly.
The Xilaiqiao elderly home located in Zhenjiang’s Xilaiqiao Town, for example, recently completed the all-electric kitchen remodeling. The facility is a long-term home to 49 elderly people and provides lunch and dinner services for more than 60 elderly people with disabilities in the town.
Before the remodeling, the facility used a traditional earthen stove for cooking, which was not only highly polluting and energy-consuming, but also posed safety hazard with the old and outdated cooking equipment.
The facility now provides much safer and more hygienic food at faster speed and up to 300 meals could be provided each day with meal preparation time cut by more than 30 percent after the transformation, it is learned.
A volunteer team is also established to provide home delivery of meals for the elderly people, delivering more than 1,200 meals every month, according to Lu Changlin, an employee of State Grid Zhenjiang Power Supply Company. (Edited by Niu Huizhe with Xinhua Silk Road, niuhuizhe@xinhua.org)
