BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A new air freight route linking south China's island province of Hainan and Bournemouth of the United Kingdom (UK) was launched on March 10.
The route, which travels between Haikou Meilan International Airport (Meilan Airport) in Haikou, the capital of Hainan, and Bournemouth Airport, marks the first direct air cargo route linking Hainan and the United Kingdom, according to the Meilan Airport.
An A340-600 airplane that departed from Bournemouth Airport arrived in Haikou on March 9, and the airplane loaded with 51 tonnes of cargo made a return trip on March 10.
The plane will make round trips between Haikou and Bournemouth three times a week after the maiden flight, mainly transporting e-commerce goods and general cargo.
Currently, the Meilan Airport has three air freight routes that travel to international or regional destinations.
