BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's lottery sales rose 36.5 percent year on year to 579.696 billion yuan (80.69 billion U.S. dollars) in 2023, data from the Ministry of Finance showed on Monday.
Sales of lottery tickets to support the country's welfare system climbed 31.3 percent year on year to 194.441 billion yuan, while lottery tickets sold to support the sports industry surged 39.3 percent to 385.255 billion yuan.
In December alone, lottery sales decreased by 13.8 percent to 53.284 billion yuan. Of the total, sales of welfare lottery tickets soared 47.7 percent to 17.476 billion yuan, while sales of sports lottery tickets dropped 28.4 percent to 35.808 billion yuan.
Under China's lottery management rules, funds raised from ticket sales are used for administrative expenses and public welfare projects, and to fund prizes.
