BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The 110-kilovolt Anji Chengbei substation in Huzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province was completed and put into operation recently.
It is estimated that during the whole life cycle, Anji Chengbei substation is expected to produce 19,358.12 tonnes of carbon dioxide due to production, installation and construction of building materials, equipment operation and other processes, and the greenhouse gas removal due to green carbon sinks and photovoltaic power generation can reach more than 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, achieving negative carbon emission.

Yuan Huihong, director of the project management center of State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company, said that carbon emissions of the Anji Chengbei substation are only about 40 percent of the same kind. State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company has innovated and implemented more than 20 carbon reduction and sequestration measures from low-carbon buildings, low-carbon equipment, carbon emission monitoring and other aspects.
In terms of low-carbon buildings, the Chengbei substation reduces the construction area and floor height through layout optimization, and reduces using building materials such as steel bars and concrete. Through the application light structure technology and prefabricated structures, greatly diminished carbon emissions. According to Yuan Huihong, the road in the substation adopts rubber asphalt pavement to realize the reuse of waste tire rubber.

The exterior walls of the distribution unit building and part of the substation are made of photovoltaic wall panels, which can continuously provide clean energy for the substation. In order to reduce the carbon emissions of transformer operation, State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company selected natural ester oil insulating transformer. Compared with traditional mineral oil, total carbon dioxide emissions of natural ester insulating oil transformers are about 90 percent lower than those of traditional transformers.

Apart from that, State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company also adopts gas insulated switchgear(GIS) in Chengbei substation, which completely replaces sulfur hexafluoride as an insulating gas, and reduces carbon emissions by more than 99.99 percent.
Furthermore, in order to accurately grasp the carbon emissions of the Chengbei substation, State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company uses digital twins and other technologies to develop a carbon emission monitoring platform to realize the measurable and visible carbon emissions of the whole process, and builds a carbon reduction effectiveness verification model, dynamically optimize the carbon reduction strategy.
