BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 5th China-Chongqing Fengjie International Orange Expo kicked off on Thursday in Jiangbei District, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, aiming to boost the high-quality development and brand influence of navel oranges produced in Chongqing's Fengjie County.
During the expo that will last until January 14, a series of events to promote, display and sell Fengjie navel oranges and experience "navel orange + coffee, biscuit, etc." will be held.
At the expo opening ceremony on Thursday, local suppliers of Fengjie navel oranges reached intentional agreements with purchasers from other parts of China, with contracted sales volume of the product standing at 84,415 tonnes and a transaction amount of 338 million yuan.
Fengjie is one of the eight main navel orange production zones in China. Thanks to the unique climate and geographical environment, navel oranges produced in the county have a unique flavor of moderate sourness in sweetness, crispy and tender flesh that melts into residue in the mouth, and rich nutrition. So far, the brand value of Fengjie navel oranges has hit 18.28 billion yuan.
With a planting area of 375,000 mu (about 25,000 hectares), the navel orange output in Fengjie is expected to reach 481,000 tonnes in 2024 to produce a comprehensive output value of more than six billion yuan. (Edited by Su Dan with Xinhua Silk Road, sudan@xinhua.org)
