BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Leading enterprises such as BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (BOE) and ZTE have sped up layouts in naked-eye 3D display since the beginning of this year, and the application of naked-eye 3D technology has gradually shifted from large screens to small ones.

Insiders said that the application of naked-eye 3D technology in small screens will penetrate into wider scenarios and open up vast growth space for the display industry.

Chinese computer giant Lenovo has recently launched a 27-inch 4K naked-eye 3D display device, ThinkVision 27 3D.

As the world's first naked-eye 3D display device, ThinkVision 27 3D marks a significant breakthrough in visual technology, and heralds the upcoming new era of multi-dimensional hybrid office and education, noted Zhang Peng, director of product planning for display business with Lenovo Group.

ThinkVision 27 3D's naked-eye 3D technology allows users to enjoy realistic 3D effects with no additional device required, said Sun Ning, senior product manager for display business with Lenovo Group, adding that this display device also integrates multi-dimensional hybrid productivity tools and provides 2D/3D hybrid experience to propel productivity development.

It is not only a display device, but also an innovative productivity tool, Sun noted.

Apart from Lenovo, many other leading enterprises in the display industry have also successively launched naked-eye 3D terminal products since the start of this year.

At the end of June, BOE launched full-size 3D innovative technology and products, and announced the collaboration with industry chain partners to build a 3D ecosystem to provide highly-competitive one-stop and platform-based solutions from display devices to whole-machine service.

ZTE also released its first AI naked-eye 3D tablet this year.

Naked-eye 3D is not a new concept and has a development history of more than ten years, said Sun, noting that the current market for naked-eye 3D products focuses on large screens, with application scenarios concentrated in commercial fields such as exhibitions, advertising, film and television.

In fact, there will be more demand for small-screen naked-eye 3D display devices, and this market boasts great potential for development, Sun said.

-- Wider application

As early as 2010, the release of the film"Avatar" led to a craze for wearing 3D glasses to watch movies. Nowadays, naked-eye 3D technology is extending 3D visual experience from cinemas to education, design and more other application areas, generating greater market demand and development prospects.

During the Hangzhou Asian Games this year, naked-eye 3D technology had been widely used in the opening and closing ceremonies to provide the audience with feasts of visual culture.

With the upcoming of the era of small screens, naked-eye 3D display devices will play a crucial role in education and training, content design and creation, teleconference, entertainment and other fields, said Sun Ning.

Particularly in the education field, the introduction of 3D educational content can bring a more realistic, three-dimensional, and comprehensive teaching experience, which helps students learn and understand faster, Sun noted.

The engineering design and research and development process greatly requires the support of 3D technology, said Ye Lin, chief technology officer of a Shanghai-based technology company, noting that naked-eye 3D display devices have application potential in professional fields as they are more convenient to use compared to wearing VR devices.

Introducing naked-eye 3D display devices to the engineering design field will greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of design, Ye added.

According to data from Shangpu Group, a consultancy, it is expected that by 2027, the shipment volume of naked-eye 3D display devices in China will reach 40 million units, and the market size will reach 12 billion U.S. dollars, with the composite growth rates of shipment volume and market size recording 27.8 percent and 28.6 percent, respectively.
