BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL, 300750.SZ) on Wednesday unveiled a new type of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capable of providing electric vehicles (EVs) with a driving range of over 400 kilometers on a 10-minute charge, reported the Xinhua-run Shanghai Securities News.
The 4C superfast charging LFP battery, dubbed Shenxing that is a Chinese phrase praising speed, can deliver a range of over 700 kilometers on a single charge.
Also highlighting fast charging over a wide temperature range, the new battery can achieve a 0-80 percent charging in 30 minutes even in temperature as low as -10°C.
Previously, CATL has launched fast charging ternary lithium batteries that are mostly used in high-end vehicle models. The Shenxing battery launched this time is expected to be applied in more mainstream vehicle models to alleviate fast charging anxiety of EV users, according to the company.
Mass production of Shenxing is expected by the end of this year, with EVs equipped with the fast-charging battery planned to hit the market in the first quarter of 2024, according to Gao Huan, CTO of CATL's EV business in China.
From January to June, the most used batteries for EVs registered in 80 countries around the world were made by CATL. The Chinese battery giant's battery capacity reached 112 GWh in the first six months, up 56.2 percent year on year and posting a 36.8 percent share in the global market, according to SNEResearch, a ROK-based provider of market research and consulting services for rechargeable battery industries.
