BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's pet food sector has embarked on a fast lane of high-quality development amid pet raising boom in the country, reported Chinanews.com quoting Wang Xiangqian, executive chairman of the pet food branch of China Feed Industry Association.
The pet food output in China reached 1,237,000 tonnes in 2022, up from 790,000 tonnes in 2018, Wang said at a conference on pet industry trends hosted by Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com on Monday in east China's Shanghai.
In the meantime, the demand for imported pet food has increased, noted Wang, adding that 1000-odd registration certificates of imported pet food has been issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Keeping pets has become part of Chinese people's life in recent years with their living standards improving alongside economic and social development. A white paper released by JD.com on Monday shows that 105.65 million households would raise pets in 2023, increasing from 98 million in 2022.
The number of pets in China is expected to increase to 446 million by 2024, according to data from consulting company Frost & Sullivan. (Edited by Su Dan with Xinhua Silk Road, sudan@xinhua.org)
