BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Muzhailing extra-long tunnel, the longest expressway tunnel in northwest China's Gansu province, completed holing-through on Thursday.
Stretching across 15.226 kilometers, the tunnel is a section of the G75 Expressway from Lanzhou City in Gansu to Haikou City in south China's Hainan province. As it sits at the intersection of several geologic plates, the construction is more than challenging. The holing-through of this tunnel marked a legendary breakthrough in the history of road tunnel construction.
He Manchao, academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, noted that the geological conditions of the Muzhailing tunnel are complex and variable. The level of deformation is so high that it goes far beyond theoretical understanding and common practice of the tunneling and underground engineering community at home and abroad. There is no experience to draw from in terms of the survey, design, and construction.

Undertaken by Gansu Provincial Highway Aviation Tourism Investment Group Co, LTD, construction of the tunnel kicked off in May of 2016.
Upon the completion of the Muzhailing tunnel, the Gansu section of Lanzhou-Haikou expressway will open to traffic, which will serve as a transport artery for the economic belt in south-central part of Gansu.
