BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's digital economy saw a compound annual growth rate of 14.2 percent during 2016-2022, according to a white paper released at the Global Digital Economy Conference 2023 held in Beijing.
The fast growth of digital economy in China is powered by the booming digital economy core industries, such as software, information technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Wang Jiangping, vice minister of industry and information technology, said at the conference that in the first five months of this year, China's software business and information technology service have raked in revenue of 4.3 trillion yuan (about 593.2 billion U.S. dollars) and 2.84 trillion yuan, respectively.
The AI industry, as a key industry of the digital economy, has recorded steady growth. According to Yu Xiaohui, head of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), the scale of China's AI industry exceeded 500 billion yuan in 2022, up 15 percent year on year.
The digital economy core industries cannot thrive without the solid foundation of digital infrastructure. Data showed that the number of 5G base stations in China had exceeded 2.84 million by the end of May, with some 2.05 billion devices connected via cellular networks.
Themed "Data Drives Development, Intelligence Leads the Future," the Global Digital Economy Conference 2023 will conclude on Friday, proposing to build an open innovation network for the digital economy across the world. (Edited by Li Shimeng with Xinhua Silk Road, lishimeng@xinhua.org)
