MILAN, June 28 (Class Editori) -- Comau and Fincantieri join forces for robotics. The two Italian companies of reference in their respective markets present the first result of their joint collaboration, as they created an automatic product. It is a mobile robot called Mobile Robot for Weld (MR4Weld), which is designed to improve the quality, performance, and well-being of operators during labor-intensive welding activities.
Ready to automate traditional manual processes
The companies have also renewed their strategic agreement to apply technology, digitalization and innovation in state-of-the-art mobile robotics solutions that will increase production speed and workers' well-being by automatizing traditional manual processes. The MR4Weld mobile robot is being tested and will later be used in Fincantieri's shipyards to weld steel structures autonomously, with the possibility of increasing operations up to 3 times compared to a manual process.
The welding robot
This system features a six-axis payload, equipped with a welding torch installed on a tracked undercarriage and with an integrated vision system for autonomously identifying welding joints. In addition, the robot ensures better welding quality while reducing ergonomic risks. It also helps transform the shipbuilding process, providing greater flexibility and higher safety, as well as reducing overall costs. MR4Weld can be easily operated by a single operator during movement and welding activities.
The system also uses digital tools to collect welding and production data, which can be used to track welded joints. As MR4Weld is fully compliant with current safety regulations, it can be used without fences on each of the multiple planes of which a ship is composed.
Fincantieri and Comau have jointly filed a European patent application for some specific technical features. This state-of-the-art solution can also be seamlessly integrated into Comau's digital infrastructure, further safeguarding the productivity and profitability of the robotic solution. Fincantieri will also work with Comau to strengthen and improve the technical skills of its operators in terms of using and programming mobile robotic systems by adapting dedicated advanced training programs already developed by Comau to shipbuilding operators.
The use of automated solutions in highly repetitive, non-high value-added production activities is one of the pillars of Fincantieri's strategy. Comau will take a further step in differentiating its business activities by extending them into new segments beyond the factory perimeter. Both companies will begin industrializing their unique MR4Weld robotic solution, which can be applied not only to the shipbuilding industry, but also to sectors requiring the production of large steel infrastructure. As part of the letter of intent, the two companies will study and evaluate ways and related agreements to further facilitate the timely development of the identified technology solutions.
