BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Pan's Orthopedics originated in 1910s. At that time, Pan Yusong, the founder of Pan's Orthopedics, diligently studied and collected methods and techniques for treating bone injuries from patients around him, accumulating a wealth of orthopedic experience.

Orthopedics is a method of reduction which has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Previously, it mainly relied on manual manipulation to help patients reduce their dislocations, but now more advanced technology, such as imaging, is used to assist orthopedic treatments. Pulling, pressing, pushing, and kneading are used to treat fractures or dislocations.

By the 1970s, the third-generation successor Pan Fengxun had inherited Pan's Orthopedics and frequently participated in training and learning of traditional Chinese orthopedics. He continued to summarize clinical experience and integrate modern medical knowledge, elevating Pan's Orthopedics to a new level.

At the same time, he founded the Yinan Panfeng Orthopedic Hospital in Linyi City, east China's Shandong Province, which has been inherited by the fourth-generation representative Liu Chunxin. After the establishment of the hospital, the scale of treatment expanded and the treatment methods were standardized.

For over 100 years, Pan's Orthopedics practitioners have relied on their superb skills in reduction techniques and self-made ointments and herbs to save lives and alleviate suffering, earning them enduring fame and popularity among the public.

Pan's Orthopedics includes touch, stretching, extension, lifting, pressing, shaking, rotating, squeezing, acupuncture and massage. These methods are used to reduce dislocations and fractures.

After reduction, local fixation, splinting, skin traction, bone traction, and bandage fixation are used to immobilize the fracture site. Then, a self-made herbal plaster including 30 Chinese herbs is applied to reduce swelling and pain.

Through generations of joint efforts, Pan's Orthopedics has been relieving the suffering of approximately 5,000 patients each year.

In December 2016, Pan's Orthopedics was listed as one of the fifth batch of municipal-level intangible cultural heritage projects in Linyi.
