Chinese companies bring logistics, transportation innovations to South American trade fair

March 09, 2023

Abstract : Chinese exhibitors showcased innovative technologies, products and services during the 27th edition of Intermodal South America, an international trade fair held from February 28 to March 2 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, attracting local and international visitors.

SAO PAULO, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exhibitors showcased innovative technologies, products and services during the 27th edition of Intermodal South America, an international trade fair held from February 28 to March 2 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, attracting local and international visitors.

As one of the largest exhibitors at the fair, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. presented its cutting-edge breakthrough achievements such as the new generation of the driverless metro, the 100 percent low-floor light rail and the hydrogen-energy urban train.

The Chinese manufacturer also introduced the integrated life-cycle service system of "Intelligent Train", such as the "Urban Rail Cloud Platform" and the "Intelligent Vehicle Maintenance System", which are equipped with advanced technology and systematic solutions of China's railway transportation equipment to meet customers' different needs.

CRRC Changchun has been cooperating with MetroRio, the metro company of Rio de Janeiro City, for more than 10 years, with products supplied to Line 1, Line 4 and intercity EMU trains providing more than 60 percent of the city's operating capacity.

In an interview with Xinhua, MetroRio Engineering and Maintenance Director Fabio Francisco revealed that MetroRio and CRRC Changchun have established a very fruitful partnership both technically and commercially.

"We have learned and grown a lot in our partnership with CRRC Changchun (...), there is no doubt that we are in a long-term partnership and we hope it will last longer than the lifetime of our trains," he said.

Chinese electric vehicle leader BYD brought to the fair a full range of products including a new electric telescopic forklift, light electric trucks, heavy electric trucks, the new Yuan Plus SUV, solar photovoltaic panels, charging stations and hybrid inverters, among others.

Since entering the market of Brazil, the largest Latin American economy, in 2014, BYD has built three factories in the country to produce electric buses, lithium batteries and solar photovoltaic modules.

According to BYD Brazil's marketing director, Adalberto Malouf, as the sustainable and green logistics market continues to grow in Brazil, the company plans to continue expanding its production chain while transferring technology and creating quality jobs, so as to bring the electric vehicle revolution that is happening in China, Europe and other markets around the world to Brazil.

"I am confident that BYD's growth in the Brazilian market will continue, as good products and markets do not stand still and more and more Brazilian companies are working on their environmental and social agendas," Malouf said.

Meanwhile, the booth of COSCO Shipping, China's leading shipping and logistics company, was packed with business people from around the world.

With "Green, Smart and Resilient" as its new development concept, the company showcased at the event new shipping and supply chain products, which will improve green and intelligent shipping to better serve the development of trade between China and Brazil, according to Wang Kunhui, COSCO Shipping's deputy general manager for Latin America.

"The China-Brazil route is one of the most efficient ones among COSCO Shipping's traditional routes, showing a very good balance between import and export. We are confident in its development," Wang told Xinhua.

It is expected that the company will become a connecting point for international trade and business services, so that the world can be better connected to China and Chinese customers, according to Wang.

As a transportation service provider, Xiamen Trans-China Logistics Co., Ltd. (Trans-China) is both a carrier of logistics transportation services and a purchaser of shipping services acting in partnership with COSCO Shipping. Trans-China General Manager Amy Peng told Xinhua that the company has been developing the Brazilian market for more than ten years in close cooperation with COSCO Shipping and other major Chinese companies.

Trans-China showcased a new business model for Brazilian customers at the fair, providing more specific, efficient and professional services, so that customers can access 24-hour service without time difference. Having been participating in Intermodal South America since 2011, the company has accumulated considerable acknowledgment and customer resources in the Brazilian market.

ECU Worldwide Brazil is a shared container service provider, which is also a Brazilian customer of COSCO Shipping.

Paula Goncalves, head of the company's export business, said that the good partnership between ECU Worldwide and COSCO Shipping has generated "quality, innovative and enthusiastic" services.

"We came to the show to consolidate our relationship with COSCO Shipping, establish business contacts throughout Latin America and continue to grow our business and strengthen our partnership," Goncalves said.

Shipping logistics is inseparable from ports. China Merchants Port Holdings' Paranagua Container Terminal, located on the Atlantic coast of the southern state of Parana, is the second largest container terminal in Brazil.

Reefer containers filled mostly with poultry and meat are exported through the terminal to China and the Middle East, according to Cao Xiaojun, CEO of China Merchants Port Paranagua Container Terminal.

"The exhibition provided us with a good platform to communicate with various shipyards, operators from neighboring ports and a wide range of import and export traders from various South American countries," said Cao.

The port of Santos in the state of Sao Paulo is one of the main ports for the country's agricultural exports to China. Kauan Torci from the Santos Port Authority said that the port is "an important strategic asset" for trade and economic relations between China and Brazil.

In March 2022, COFCO International Brazil won a 25-year concession for an agricultural bulk terminal at the Port of Santos. "These partnerships and interactions reinforce the importance of Brazil's bilateral relationship with China and consolidate the development of the port of Santos in this important segment of foreign trade," Torci said.

The 27th edition of Intermodal South America 2023 was held at Sao Paulo Expo and attracted some 500 exhibitors and more than 40,000 participants from around the world. (Contributed by Luo Jingjing, edited by Yu Huichen with Xinhua Silk Road, yuhuichen@xinhua.org)
