Canning industry brings prosperity to Pingyi County of E.China's Shandong

Abstract : Located in east China's Shandong province, Pingyi County is currently the largest canned fruit and vegetable processing base nationwide, producing more than 30 percent of canned fruits in the country each year.

BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Located in east China's Shandong province, Pingyi County is currently the largest canned fruit and vegetable processing base nationwide, producing more than 30 percent of canned fruits in the country each year.

After more than 30 years of industry experience, Pingyi has now 64 canning production enterprises, with an annual output of 700,000 tonnes of various cans and an annual output value of more than 10 billion yuan. Among the enterprises, two high-tech enterprises are members of the China's Torch Program.

The canning industry has driven the development of other industries, in the county, in addition to the rows of canneries, there are also many chain hotels and restaurants, which is convenient for merchants from all over the country to negotiate business here.

Pingyi County has obvious advantages in fruit cultivation, with the planting area of canned raw materials such as yellow peaches, hawthorn and pears reaching 37,530 mu (about 2502 hectares), 8,560 mu (about 570.67 hectares) and 2,000 mu (about 133.33 hectares) respectively, the county sees an annual output of 1 million tonnes of various fruits such as peaches, pears and hawthorn.

It is learned that the canning industry in Pingyi County started in the 1980s, after more than 30 years of development, the county has formed a canned industry cluster based on canned fruit and vegetable processing, fruit production, printing iron cans, glass products, color printing packaging, refrigerated storage, information intermediary, logistics loading and other related industries.

In addition, 12 enterprises above designated size in the cluster have established production bases, and the rest of the enterprises above designated size involved in the production and processing of canned fruits and vegetables have adopted the company + professional cooperative + farmer model, thus eatablishing 20 professional cooperatives for fruit and vegetable planting.

It is worth mentioning that nearly 30 percent of canned fruits in Pingyi County are sold online, and the online sales of products have exceeded value of 100 million yuan. Local canned food enterprise Qiwei Food has reached a global cooperation agreement with Wal-Mart, a world-leading supermarket operator, to sell its canned food to more than 20 countries and regions around the world.
