BEIJING, Feb. 27(Xinhua) -- The scale of China's core artificial intelligence (AI) industry has exceeded 500 billion yuan so far, with the number of AI enterprises approaching 4000, according to an MIIT official.
The figures were announced by Ren Aiguang, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), at the Global AI Developer Conference (GAIDC) held in China's eastern metropolis of Shanghai over the weekend.
AI has become a key field of international competition today and also one of the three leading industries in Shanghai, Ren said, adding that the MIIT will continue to support Shanghai in promoting the AI development in multiple fields such as technology research and development, standard making, ethical governance, talent training, etc.
As the country’s first pilot zone for the AI innovation and application, Shanghai, in recent years, has seized the development opportunities of AI and achieved major breakthroughs in key areas such as intelligence chips, core algorithm, intelligent terminals, applications, etc., making it an important highland for the AI development both at home and abroad.
