BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese currency renminbi (RMB), or the yuan, remained the fifth most active currency for global payments by value in January 2023, with a share of 1.91 percent, said the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT).
Compared to December 2022, the value of RMB payments dropped by 12.79 percent in January 2023, in which the Chinese New Year holiday was celebrated.
In terms of international payments, excluding payments within the Eurozone, the RMB ranked the eighth with a share of 1.33 percent during the same period.
The four currencies that rank ahead of the RMB are the U.S. dollar, the euro, the British pound and the Japanese yen, accounting for 40.12 percent, 37.88 percent, 6.57 percent and 3.15 percent of global payments, respectively, according to SWIFT.
