BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China has officially delivered two nuclear power units to the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan on February 2, reported Sichuan Daily Tuesday citing words from Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC).
This is the first time that Chinese nuclear power units using home-grown third-generation nuclear power technology of Hualong One were delivered to a foreign client, according to the report.
The move marks the completion of Hualong One's first project in Pakistan, which is another important milestone in nuclear energy cooperation between the two countries.
Hualong One Karachi Nuclear Power Plant is Pakistan's largest nuclear power plant and the first single-unit million-kilowatt power project in Pakistan. On May 20, 2021, the K2 unit officially entered commercial operation. On April 18, 2022, the K3 unit went through trail run and was accepted.
According to statistics, the K2 and K3 units have provided more than 60,000 local jobs, and have generated nearly 20 billion kWh of electricity since the commercial operation, meeting the annual production and living electricity needs of the local population of 2 million, and having great significance to optimize Pakistan's energy structure.
Hualong One is China's third-generation nuclear power technology with full intellectual property rights, and is also one of the most widely accepted third-generation nuclear power reactors in the current global market.
