BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's crude steel output in 2022 is estimated at 1.01 billion tonnes, down 2.4 percent year on year, according to a report released by China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute (MPI) on Tuesday.
The report on China's demand for steel and iron in 2023 predicts the country's crude steel output is likely to decline 1 percent year on year to 1 billion tonnes next year.
Looking from the demand side, China's steel consumption is estimated to go down 3.1 percent year on year to 920 million tonnes in 2022 and decrease 1.1 percent year on year to 910 million tonnes in 2023.
China's crude steel output reached 1.05 billion tonnes in 2020, exceeding 1 billion tonnes for the first time.
To reach the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, China will upgrade over 80 percent of steel production capacity to achieve ultra-low emissions and cut overall energy consumption per tonne of steel by more than 2 percent, according to a guideline jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in February.
