SAO PAULO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) - China has been the main growth sustaining engine of global economy for several years and the trend is that if China does well, the world does well, says a Brazilian expert.

"China had an important role in sustaining the global economy in 2022, both on the demand side and on the supply side," said Luis Antonio Paulino, a professor in the Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences at Sao Paulo State University, in a recent interview with Xinhua.

Paulino explained that on the demand side, China has kept commodity imports at a high level, and on the supply side, China has increased the export of industrial inputs needed for recovery of global economy.

IMF projects that the Chinese economy would be growing around 4.4 percent in 2023, standing out among global economies.

"The expected improvement of the Chinese economy in 2023 will certainly contribute to balancing the negative trends in the rest of the world," said the professor, who considered the scenario for 2023 would be of "great uncertainty" due to the global cycle of rising interest rates, and falling commodity prices.

Paulino also demanded "more attention" to be paid to increasing inequality around the world with the increasing number of people living below the poverty line.

IMF projections show that in 2023, developed economies will grow by 1.1 percent, the emerging countries will grow by 3.7 percent, and the world as a whole by 2.7 percent.
