A new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany could be in use by the end of 2022, energy company Uniper said.
"If things go well, the first gas will flow before the end of the year," Uniper boss Klaus-Dieter Maubach said in Dusseldorf on Wednesday. The weather conditions need to be right, Uniper added.
According to current plans, the special regasification ship will arrive in Wilhelmshaven already fully loaded and will then be able to feed gas into the system at the end of the year.
The first LNG tanker will then arrive "in the best case" in mid-January. Uniper is building and operating the terminal with the support of the German government.
The heart of the landing terminal is the special ship, the so-called "Floating Storage & Regasification Unit" (FSRU). The liquefied gas tankers transfer their cargo to this vessel, which converts it back into a gaseous state and pumps it ashore.
Among other things, Germany is relying on LNG delivered by ship to replace Russian pipeline gas and is building several terminals to handle the new supplies.
