New-type carbon dioxide energy storage verification project enters operation in Deyang, Sichuan

September 02, 2022

Abstract : A new-type carbon dioxide energy storage verification project was put into operation in Deyang city, southwest China's Sichuan province recently, according to China International Marine Containers (Group) Ltd. (CIMC).

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- A new-type carbon dioxide energy storage verification project was officially put into operation in Deyang city, southwest China's Sichuan province recently, reported Chinanews.com Wednesday citing China International Marine Containers (Group) Ltd. (CIMC).

It is learned that core energy storage special equipment of the project is developed and constructed by CIMC Enric, a subsidiary of CIMC. The project will play a key role in realizing the engineering and large-scale development of the new carbon dioxide energy storage system.

China sees huge and urgent demand in energy storage market. New technologies such as carbon dioxide energy storage and compressed air energy storage have the advantages of large scale, high efficiency, low cost, and environmental protection, and are considered to be large-scale energy storage technologies with greater development potential.

The project utilises surplus power during low periods of electricity consumption to compress carbon dioxide gas into a liquid at normal temperature and normal pressure, thereby store the thermal energy generated during the compression process. During peak electricity consumption, the stored thermal energy is used to heat liquid carbon dioxide to gaseous state and drive turbines for power generation. Featuring longer storage period and less system degradation, it takes less than half the cost of larger lithium-ion batteries.

Yang Xiaohu, Executive Director and General Manager of CIMC Enric, said, as green energy gradually begins to replace traditional power generation, large-scale energy storage will be needed all around the world, new technologies such as carbon dioxide and compressed air energy storage are emerging.
