BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The installation of Linglong One reactor, a multipurpose modular small nuclear reactor technology demonstration project located in Changjiang, a county of south China's Hainan Province, starts on Tuesday, reported Shanghai Securities News.
The reactor coolant drain tank, the first pre-installed equipment of the project was successfully hoisted into place on that day.
Linglong One is the world's first onshore commercial modular small nuclear reactor which is independently developed by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). CNNC has independent intellectual property rights for the reactor.
Compared with Hualong One, a third-generation large-scale reactor with an electric power of one million kilowatts, Linglong One reactor has an electric power of only 125,000 kilowatts, but it can realize the multi-purpose application of nuclear energy on the basis of power supply, such as urban heating and cooling, industrial steam supply, seawater desalination, heavy oil exploitation, etc., boasting the functions that cannot be replaced by large-scale nuclear power units.
