BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- As of 9:20 pm on May 18, power delivered to central China's Hunan Province through the Qilian-Shaoshan ultra-high voltage direct-current (UHVDC) transmission line has topped 100 billion kWh, enough to supply 66.44 million Hunan residents for 633 days.
Linking the converter stations in Qilian, northwest China's Gansu Province and Hunan's Shaoshan, the power line plays an important role in ensuring Hunan's power supply while bringing economic and social benefits.

Data shows that a total of 32.3 billion kWh of clean power has been transmitted through the line, which means it has reduced burning of 20.3 million tons of standard coal, equivalent to reducing 52 million tons of carbon dioxide emission and 210,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emission.
Since the transmission line was put into operation in 2017, State Grid Hunan Electric Power Company Limited has taken multiple measures to improve its efficiency, increasing its transmission capacity from 2.4 million kW to 6 million kW.

The company has also promoted signing of long-term deals, ensuring stable cooperation among provincial regions in various terms including power supply, agreed electricity volume, power transmission plan and basic electricity price. The growth rate of power transmitted through the Qilian-Shaoshan power line exceeded 20 percent for two consecutive years from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, the power line delivered to Hunan more than two thirds of the total power purchased by the province from outside.
Facing the increasing prices of thermal coal since the second half of 2021, State Grid Hunan proactively communicated with power generating firms in Gansu to adjust their prices and increase their willingness to cooperate, ensuring the utilization efficiency of the Qilian-Shaoshan power line. Through closely tracking the supply and demand situation, the company has made more than 20 additional deals to support power supply in Hunan, purchasing electricity from other provincial regions in northwest China such as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province.

In the future, State Grid Hunan will continue to enhance its efforts in building new generation power system, promoting the construction of the Jingmen-Changsha ultra-high voltage alternating current power transmission project, and increasing the utilization efficiency of the Qilian-Shaoshan transmission channel, in a bid to support Hunan to reach its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
