Daimler to launch licence system for 3D-printed spare parts

May 19, 2022

Abstract : Spare parts for Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses and coaches will soon be made using 3D printers and available to anyone with a licence, parent firm Daimler Truck announced.

Spare parts for Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses and coaches will soon be made using 3D printers and available to anyone with a licence, parent firm Daimler Truck announced.

In a process that could represent the future of simple vehicle repairs, the owners of the buses will only need to acquire a licence in order to print the required part.

More than 100 of the 1,500 printable spare parts will be available from June, the firm said.

Daimler Truck, with around 100,000 employees, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of trucks and buses.

3D printers print with liquid plastic or metal that hardens after it has been applied. Layer after layer is printed upwards to create a specific shape.

The printers are used in car manufacturing, medicine and other industries, and can create intricate shapes not so easily produced in a factory.
