BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Hubei Provincial Museum in central China's Wuhan city on Wednesday held a ceremony to mark International Museum Day that falls on every 18th of May since 1978.
As set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the theme of International Museum Day 2022 is "The Power of Museums" which focuses on ways through which museums can transform the world around them.
The total number of Chinese museums rose by 395 to 6,183 in 2021, 90 percent of them offering free admission, Li Qun, vice minister of culture and tourism and head of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, gave the figures while addressing the event via video link.
Chinese museums received a total of 779 million visitors last year, and the exhibitions and training sessions they presented online garnered 4.1 billion views, figures showed. (Edited by Zhong Xinpei, Niu Huizhe with Xinhua Silk Road, niuhuizhe@xinhua.org)
