BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- At present, the revenue growth rate of China's data center industry is significantly higher than that of the world, reaching 150 billion yuan (about 22.72 billion U.S. dollars) in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate of 30.69 percent in recent three years, according to a white paper issued by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), reported Economic Information Daily on Thursday.
CAICT's 2022 white paper on data center also anticipates that the industry's revenue will remain rapid growth in the future, exceeding 190 billion yuan this year, with surging demands driven by new infrastructure, digital transformation, motivating policies such as the Digital China initiative, and enterprises' practical needs to reduce costs and increase benefits.
Favorable policies are also providing constant support to the investments in China's data center construction. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is committed to guide the expansion of effective investments to promote the data center cluster projects, optimize data center layout, and accelerate the transformation to high technology, high computing power and high efficiency.
China has rolled out a mega project to build an integrated national big data system, which involves establishing eight national computing hubs and ten national data center clusters, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The top economic planner will further enhance its coordinating efforts to promote the influence of the eight national computing hubs, stimulating upstream and downstream investment of the data center industry.
As required by the layout of the mega project, relevant market entities have proactively participated in the construction of data centers, revealing initial effects of driving investments, said Sun Wei, an official with the NDRC's department of innovation and high-tech development. 25 project in the ten national data center clusters started construction since this year, with the computing power equaling that of around 27 million personal computers, Sun said.
It is forecasted that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), investments in data centers will add up to over 3 trillion yuan, with an annual growth rate of over 20 percent.
