BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The concept of metaverse is attracting increasing attention from China's local governments and media companies, stirring heated discussions across various fields of industry, education and research, reported Shanghai Securities News on Wednesday.
Some local governments in China have started their exploration in the concept. Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province has announced to launch the country's first Sci-fi Week in November, which is guided by Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology and co-initiated by Science & Fantasy Growth Foundation and Metaverse Innovation Laboratory.
The Economy and Information Technology Department of east China's Zhejiang Province has recently organized a forum on the development of metaverse to better understand the concept and its future perspective, promoting local enterprises to seize the opportunities in the metaverse industry and initiate strategical layout.
As China's first comprehensive big data pilot area, southwest China's Guizhou Province will make specific effort in providing high-quality data computing services. Taking metaverse development as a turning point, the province will carry out a series of favorable policies to build data center clusters and develop relevant industries.
It has been acknowledged that metaverse, although sounds mysterious, is representing the next generation of the internet, said an insider in the industry. "It is a good thing to have the official sector paying attention to this area. After all, it is almost certain that the internet is expected to have huge reforms with technological innovation."
Chinese internet giant NetEase Inc. has been getting itself ready for metaverse as well. With cutting-edge technology in areas such as VR, AR, AI, cloud gaming and blockchain, NetEase has equipped itself with the capability to develop metaverse, according to the company.
The market size related with metaverse will reach 800 billion U.S. dollars by the year 2024, and expand to 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars by 2030, predicted by a Bloomberg industry report.
However, in a recent report on metaverse by the New Media Research Center of Tsinghua University, it is pointed out that currently the technology and content ecology of metaverse is yet to be mature, which indicates a still long process in making the ideals a reality.
