International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals officially launched in Beijing

Abstract : The International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), the world's first international scientific research institution to serve the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with big data, was officially launched in Beijing on Monday.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), the world's first international scientific research institution to serve the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with big data, was officially launched in Beijing on Monday.

With the aims of developing and building a sustainable development big data platform, carrying out indicator monitoring and evaluation scientific research of sustainable development, developing and operating sustainable development scientific satellites, constructing scientific and technological innovation to promote sustainable development think tanks, and providing education and training for developing countries, CBAS provides a new platform for global scientists to participate in and promote the realization of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the Inauguration Ceremony of the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals & Opening Ceremony of the International Forum on Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals which was held both online and offline, officials and experts from home and abroad expressed their congratulations on the establishment of CBAS.

According to Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, who made a video speech, fully affirmed the significance of the launch of CBAS to the global promotion of scientific and technological innovation and the implementation of the SDGs.

CBAS can work with big data regional centers to use the UN technology promotion mechanism as the driving force, provide solutions to support the SDGs, and jointly contribute to the UN big data global platform, Antonio Guterres added.

Liu Zhenmin, UN Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, said that the establishment of CBAS is an important achievement focused on establishing a global partnership for SDGs, protecting disadvantaged groups, ensuring fairness, equality and public trust in science and technology, and demonstrating the application prospects of big data in promoting sustainable development.

Big data technology plays an important role in the realization of SDGs, especially the indicators of SDGs related to the environment, according to Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, calling on countries around the world to strengthen cooperation and actions to enhance the effectiveness of data.

Ibrahim Thaw, Undersecretary-General and executive-secretary of UNCCD noted that, the UN has carried out a series of work in the use of big data to achieve SDGs, and hopes to deepen cooperation with CBAS in data system integration and data sharing policy establishment.

The Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) will uphold the principle of extensive consultation, joint construction, and win-win cooperation in the construction of the CBAS, and build it into a scientific research center, a technological innovation center and high-end science and technology think-tank dedicated to sustainable development, said Hou Jianguo, president of the CAS.

Guo Huadong, director general of the CBAS, also an academician of the CAS, said that the construction of CBAS aims to meet the needs of SDGs. On the basis of the big earth data, CBAS will build a multi-discipline integrated sustainable development big data cloud service system platform, establish a global SDGs monitoring and evaluation system, and build a research institution with global influence, providing scientific and technological support for the SDGs.

Themed "Big Data for Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals", the forum is scheduled to be held from September 6 to 8, attracting nearly 1,000 participants from 61 countries and regions.
