BEIJING, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The 2021 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) International Round Table, co-hosted by the Secretariat of the SCO and Lianyungang Municipal People's Government, kicked off on Friday in Lianyungang, a port city in east China's Jiangsu Province.
Themed on "enhancing international cooperation in economy and trade, and promoting facilitation in merchandise exports and imports among SCO member states", the meeting is aimed at exploring new ideas and new countermeasures to build an international logistics cooperation relationship with mutual respect, mutual support, and win-win cooperation.
Adopting the "online + offline" dual modes, the SCO Secretariat and relevant officials from SCO member countries, observer countries, and dialogue partner countries attended the meeting.
Viewed as a strong fulcrum for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the important node city in the New Eurasian Land Bridge, Lianyungang takes the role of a two-way opening window and a rail-sea transportation hub. In recent years, with the vigorous economic development of the SCO countries and the in-depth implementation of the BRI, Lianyungang is ramping up efforts to build itself into the SCO overseas base and the China-Kazakhstan logistics cooperation base, both of which have achieved significant progress and caused widespread concern.
Xiang Xuelong, Secretary of the CPC Lianyungang Municipal Committee, said at the conference that Lianyungang will further deepen exchanges and cooperation with the SCO countries in multiple fields such as transportation, logistics, economics and trade, agricultural industry, medicine, e-commerce, etc., in an attempt to jointly write a new chapter in coordinated development, mutual benefit and win-win results.

The SCO Secretariat and SCO member countries will carry out in-depth cooperation with Lianyungang so as to achieve more fruitful results in the future, Vladimir Norov, Secretary-general of the SCO said, adding that the SCO Secretariat is willing to actively promote the SCO and related countries to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Lianyungang, and continuously improve the level of multilateral cooperation.
As one of the first open coastal cities in China and the eastern terminal of the 10,900-km-long New Eurasian Land Bridge, Lianyungang is a national comprehensive transportation hub, and the Port of Lianyungang is one of China's main container ports.
On Dec. 1, 1992, a locomotive pulled the first international freight train to Central Asia and Europe from Lianyungang, marking the official opening of the New Eurasian Land Bridge. The locomotive has been preserved to this day in the port of Lianyungang, bearing testimony to the transformation of economic and trade cooperation between China and Europe.
Over the years, Lianyungang has given full play to its unique location and port advantages to actively facilitate the construction of the cross-border international logistics transportation channel with distinctive features. (Edited by Yang Yifan with Xinhua Silk Road, yangyifan@xinhua.org)
