BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China's industrial digitalization is forging ahead, with the scale hitting 31.7 trillion yuan in 2020, accounting for 80.9 percent of the country's digital economy and 31.2 percent of the total GDP, according to a white paper on China's digital economy development released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology last month.

Industries have picked up pace towards digital transformation. Last year, the digital economy in industry, agriculture and service sectors accounted for 21 percent, 8.9 percent and 40.7 percent of respective industrial added value, said the white paper.

New infrastructure represented by 5G, which is under accelerated construction, is expected to empower industrial digitalization. For example, southwest China's Yunnan Province plans to build 30,000 5G base stations this year to achieve gigabit broadband coverage in key places such as transportation hubs, schools, hospitals, and major industrial parks. This will lay a solid foundation for promoting industrial digital transformation across the province and accelerating high quality development of digital economy.

China has issued a host of measures to advance digital transformation of industries in recent years.

The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 outlined a roadmap for advancing industrial digitalization. It proposed to build a number of industrial internet platforms that are up to international standards and digital transformation promotion centers for key industries and regions, advance application of digital technologies in research and development, design, production, manufacturing, operation, management, market service and other links, and speed up the digital transformation of industrial parks. In the manufacturing sector, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently issued a plan for intelligent manufacturing development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, which specified that digitalization would be basically achieved in manufacturing enterprises above designated size by 2025 and be fully rolled out in such enterprises by 2035.

Backed by policy support, digital transformation of coal, energy, transportation and other key sectors is also embarking on a fast track. The guidelines on integration of industrialization and informatization of coal industry for the 2021-2025 period clarified focuses, objectives and tasks of digital transformation of coal enterprises. It vowed to promote internet technology, equipment, standards and platform construction in the coal industry, and push forward development of 5G pilots and application in various coal-related scenarios.

Industrial digitalization is also the priority of local digital economy development. Governments of Ningxia, Zhejiang, Guangdong, among other provincial-level regions, have released related polices to promote development of digital industrialization.
