BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese card payment giant China UnionPay saw its online transactions surge during the five-day May Day holiday that concluded on Wednesday, the Xinhua-run Shanghai Securities News reported on Thursday.
According to the report, payments through the China UnionPay network increased 5.5 percent from the same period of last year to 1.91 trillion yuan during the period.
The figure was a record high compared with previous May Day holidays.
Chen Han, a data analyst with China UnionPay, said that catering, hotel accommodation and shopping were the main areas of holiday consumption.
According to Chen, spending in the catering sector rose by more than 30 percent year on year.
China UnionPay is the country's largest bank card payment processor, and UnionPay cards are accepted in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide.
