BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The construction of 49,900-tonne methanol dual-fuel tanker kicked off on Thursday in Guangdong by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), marking a step further in China's series tanker production, reported CCTV.com.
The 49,900-tonne methanol dual-fuel tanker is China's first environmental-friendly tanker project. Propelled in fuel oil mode and methanol mode, it can be switched between two modes. When using methanol mode, the ship can greatly reduce the emission of sulfur-containing gas.
The design of the methanol ship will reduce the carbon dioxide emission by at least 10 percent, said Huang Jun, Deputy Chief Engineer of CSSC GSI.
At present, methanol can be used in more than 100 ports around the world. Compared with similar alternative products such as liquefied natural gas, methanol has a largermarket potential withcost and safety advantages.
