Having side jobs popular among young Chinese: survey

March 05, 2021

Abstract : A recent survey by China Youth Daily shows that 30 percent of young Chinese have a side hustle in addition to their full-time job, and over 61 percent of them are planning to take one on.

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- A recent survey by China Youth Daily shows that 30 percent of young Chinese have a side hustle in addition to their full-time job, and over 61 percent of them are planning to take one on.

Of the 1,945 respondents aged from 18 to 35, 58 percent attribute having a side job to the attraction of emerging industries and occupations, while 56 percent choose to do so due to financial stress, the newspaper reported on Thursday.

The most popular choices include online businesses, part-time chauffeurs, running "we media" accounts, counseling and tutoring, according to the survey.

More than 60 percent of those polled said a side job can enrich their lives, satisfy their personal interests and development needs or increase their income, while 54 percent of them believe it will help them realize their dreams.

When asked the influence of having a side hustle, 48 percent of the respondents view it as a positive factor, while 18 percent say it is more of a negative one, citing possible negative effects on their day jobs.

Over 70 percent of the respondents hold that, for better career development, side hustles should be taken up without affecting their full-time job, while 57 percent suggest not blindly starting a side business until one that fits himself or herself is found. Enditem
