BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- China's photovoltaic (PV) industry has bucked the trend under the influence of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, realizing a total of 48.2 gigawatts (GW) of newly installed capacity, up 60 percent year on year, and making the cumulative capacity to 253 GW, reported People's Daily Wednesday.
The booming PV industry was also attributed to the surging PV products output. Major PV products including polycrystalline silicon, silicon wafers, cells and modules have increased by 14.6 percent, 19.7 percent, 22.2 percent and 26.4 percent in total output in 2020, respectively.
Wang Bohua, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) said that in 2020, China has ranked first in the world in cumulative installation and new installation for 6 consecutive years and 8 consecutive years, respectively.
In 2020, the newly PV installed capacity reached about 130 GW globally, up 13 percent year on year. Despite the epidemic, the global PV industry has maintained its growth momentum thanks to the resilient growth of the Chinese PV market, Wang added.
China's total exports of the PV products in 2020 stood at 19.75 billion U.S. dollars, dropped by five percent year on year due to the epidemic and price fluctuation.
Despite the decline, the exports of PV modules surged 18 percent year on year in 2020, while the exports of silicon wafers and cells were basically flat from a year earlier.
However, the existing burdens in the PV industry such as tight supply and demand in the industrial chain, as well as the single profit model of new energy storage, are restricting the development of the PV industry in the long term.
According to the forecast of the CPIA, China's newly PV installed capacity are expected to reach 55 to 65 GW in 2021, while during the period from 2021-2025, the country will achieve an annual newly PV installed capacity of 70 to 90 GW.
In addition, the industry expert reveals that the PV application on charging pile, ultra-high voltage and big data will also take the mainstream in the PV industry.
