BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's leading short video apps have witnessed fast expansion of overseas business during the virus-stricken 2020, according to a report on China's internet development released Wednesday.
The report said the overseas expansion of short video sector last year fueled its development. Major short video apps started to go global in 2016, gaining considerable progress.
For example, Douyin, also known as Tiktok, were downloaded 626 million times around the globe in the first half of 2020, ranking the first in the app store. During the same period, it earned 421 million U.S. dollars in Apple and Google systems.
Kwaishou, Douyin's main rival in China, rolled out similar short video apps such as Kwai and Snack Video, targeting different global markets. With all efforts, the apps have been popular in the Republic of Korea, Russia and Vietnam.
The experience gained in China's domestic market laid solid foundation for their overseas exploration.
According to the report issued by the China Internet Network Information Center (CINNC), the number of China's online short video users reached 873 million by the end of last year, surging by 100 million compared with that in March 2020 and accounting for 88 percent of the internet-using population.
Market insiders believe that short video is likely to attract more users with longer using time, as the 5G technology will further accelerate the industry's development. Many industries, such as advertisement, e-commerce, and gaming industry, could share the benefits brought by the booming short video industry.
