BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The annual turnover of Taobao Villages in China has exceeded one trillion yuan, according to a research report released on Saturday by Alibaba's research arm AliResearch at the 8th China Taobao Village Summit Conference in Suning County, north China's Hebei Province.
The Taobao Villages are rural e-commerce hubs that feature Alibaba's logistics, services and training to encourage farmers to engage in online sales of farm produce and local specialties.
There have been 5,425 Taobao Villages in China as of June, creating jobs for 8.28 million people and offering immense opportunities for migrant workers to return to their hometown and start their own businesses, according to the report.
Of the total, 745 Taobao Villages realized an annual turnover of more than 100 million yuan and one had an annual transaction value of 10 billion yuan.
The figures showed that Taobao Villages are moving beyond the scope of rural economy and township-based entrepreneurship toward economies of scale, reported the Xinhua-run China Securities Journal. (Edited by Su Dan with Xinhua Silk Road, sudan@xinhua.org)
