BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi Province, saw a surge in China-Europe freight train trips in the first eight months of 2020, reported local newspaper on Thursday.
The city operated 2,439 China-Europe freight train trips during the period, 1.9 times of the number during the same period last year.
The international Chang'an rail freight route, which departs from Xi'an, opened in 2013, shortly after the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Chang'an service, has further connected western China with the outside world over the past seven years, helping increase trade with countries in Central Asia and Europe.
Thanks to the Chang'an service, the city's foreign trade volume hit 166.15 billion yuan (about 24.34 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half, up 2.9 percent year on year, 6.1 percentage points higher than the national average.
