KUNMING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A project with an annual capacity of 2.03 million metric tons (tonnes) of green aluminum started operation on Thursday in an industrial park in Yanshan County, southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The project is located in a 20-square-kilometer industrial park for green aluminum production and spearheaded by Weiqiao Pioneering Group, a world leading aluminum manufacturer. It aims to promote hydropower-aluminum integration and create a green, low-carbon aluminum industrial chain in hydro-power-rich Yunnan.
With a total investment of about 40 billion yuan (about 5.92 billion U.S. dollars), the industrial park, when completed, is expected to generate an annual sales revenue of 100 billion yuan, achieve more than 30 billion yuan value-added industrial output and create over 12,000 jobs.
The electrolytic aluminum industry is one of the pillar businesses in Yunnan. The province is emerging as a major hub for aluminum produced from hydropower. (Edited by Li Shimeng, Hu Pingchao with Xinhua Silk Road, lishimeng@xinhua.org, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
