August 13, 2020

Abstract : The data released by the China State Railways Group show a +68% y-o-y in the number of freight trains: for the third consecutive month, it has overcome the threshold of 1,000.

MILAN, Aug 12 (Class Editori) - A special cargo has departed today from Xi’an and it has been organized by the Structure of the Extraordinary Commissioner Arcuri, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Beijing. The train, made up of 45 wagons, carries medical-health equipment on board addressed the fight against the COVID epidemic, including 16 tons of melt blow, a key component for the production of face masks in Italy.

The train, which should arrive in Italy on next August 27, is one of the thousands which have been connecting China and Europe in these months, by reaching a new peak compared to the rail traffic recorded last year. According to Beijing data, last July the number of freight trains amounted at 1,232, with an increase by 68% compared to July 2019.

July has been the third consecutive month during which the monthly threshold of 1,000 trains has been outdone, with a double-digit growth year on year.

According to the Chinese railways, which keep a precise record of traffic, the freight transport by rail has played an essential role in stabilizing the international logistics chain, which had been interrupted by the pandemic. As the same sources have disclosed, in July the departed cargos grew by 73% compared to the previous year.

In July, 724 trains departed from China, with an increase by 74%, while the number of trains departing from the opposite direction grew by 60%, to 508. The main part of the COVID protective equipment, about 5 million devices, have been transported by rail.
