BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL, 300750.SZ) and Mercedes-Benz jointly announced an enhanced partnership on Wednesday to create cutting-edge battery technology in support of the high-volume electrification of the Mercedes-Benz model portfolio.
The agreement between the two sides covers the full range of batter technologies, from cells and modules for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars to entire battery systems for Mercedes-Benz vans.
CATL will provide advanced carbon-neutrally produced battery cells, modules and systems for the Stuttgart-based luxury car maker to facilitate implementation of its "Electric First" Strategy.
Through the extended cooperation, the two sides aim to shorten development cycles, increase the range of future batteries by advancing energy density, and reduce charging time.
Working with CATL will help Mercedes-Benz accelerate its transformation toward carbon-neutrality. CATL will be a major supplier securing capacity for the next generations of Mercedes-Benz's EQ products in the years to come, said Markus Schäfer, member of the board of management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG responsible for Daimler Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars COO.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS to be launched next year will be equipped with CATL cell modules and thus achieve a range of over 700 kilometers.
Besides, Mercedes-Benz and CATL will jointly boost the industrialization of lithium-ion batteries in Germany.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, with businesses covering R&D, manufacturing and sales in battery systems for new energy vehicles and energy storage systems.
