China's Shanghai spearheads AI development with more projects launched

July 09, 2020

Abstract : East China's Shanghai has considered artificial intelligence (AI) as one of its three major industries to promote the industry development.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- East China's Shanghai has considered artificial intelligence (AI) as one of its three major industries for key development.

According to statistics, there have been 1,116 key AI enterprises in Shanghai so far, and the output value of the sizable AI enterprises each with the main business revenue above 20 million yuan reached 147.7 billion yuan (about 21.1 billion U.S. dollars) in 2019, an increase of 10.7 percent year on year.

Since the beginning of this year, Shanghai has made efforts to attract investment projects in AI industry. At present, a number of new projects have been contracted, such as Tencent's Yangtze River Delta AI supercomputing center, Midea Group's second headquarters project and artificial intelligence research and development center, and Beiyang AT Town.

It is worth noting that the projects signed at the closing ceremony of 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) are progressing well.

For example, a leading Chinese AI company SenseTime has seen its China headquarters settle in Shanghai and now is accelerating the construction of a "New Generation Supercomputing Center" here.

The IBM AI innovation center will open this month. The AI firm CloudWalk Technology has settled in Zhangjiang AI Island, and currently has nearly 500 employees. TuSimple, a self-driving truck company, is promoting large-scale commercial demonstration project of driverless trucks in Lingang Sci-Tech City and has already built a driverless test R&D center.
