China, Mexico to deepen bilateral cooperation through joint COVID-19 fight: FMs

April 16, 2020

Abstract : In their joint battle against COVID-19, China and Mexico are set to strengthen bilateral ties, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Wednesday in a telephone conversation with Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- In their joint battle against COVID-19, China and Mexico are set to strengthen bilateral ties, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Wednesday in a telephone conversation with Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Wang Noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reached an important consensus in a recent telephone conversation on deepening cooperation against COVID-19.

Wang said he believes that by combatting the disease together, the two countries will continue to deepen win-win cooperation and push their comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.

Not long ago, the Mexican Embassy in China lowered its flag at half-mast during China's mourning for the martyrs and victims of COVID-19, an illustration of its friendship with the Chinese people, he said.

China sympathizes with the people of Mexico as the latter confronts its own COVID-19 challenge, Wang noted.

Wang said that China is working to guard against potential imported infections and prevent a resurgence of the outbreak within the country.

Still, China understands Mexico's urgent needs and is willing to offer support to Mexico within its capacity, including helping it purchase urgently needed supplies from China, exchanging experience with Mexican medical experts, setting up express channels to facilitate cargo charter flights, and safeguarding the China-Mexico air bridge, he added.

For his part, Ebrard thanked China for its assistance to Mexico in its anti-epidemic fight and said he hopes that China could continue to support Mexico in the purchase and transportation of supplies, equipment and medicines, as the virus continues to spread in the country.

Mexico stands ready to work together with China to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and bolster bilateral ties in the fight against the pandemic, he added. Enditem
