The amount of building permits issued for apartments in Germany increased surprisingly strongly last year. They climbed by 4 percent to 360,600 permits, the Federal Office of Statistics announced in Wiesbaden on Tuesday. This includes permits for apartments in new buildings as well as construction measures such as renovations and storey extensions. Since 2000, the only year there were more permits for building flats in Germany was in 2016 when more than 375,000 were issued.
Before that, there had been little increase in building permits had for a long time. In 2018, the figures, which are considered an important indicator for new construction, declined slightly. However, they then shot up in December 2019. The statisticians explained that there had been a number of major construction projects. However, they said that the exact cause could not be determined.
Meanwhile, building permits for new multi-family houses increased by 4.6 percent. But there was also an increase for one- and two-family houses. However, although many apartments were approved, they were not all built immediately. This "construction backlog" has been increasing for years, according to the statisticians. One reason is thought to be that tradesmen have been booked up with work.
