According to a new study, the eastern German state of Saxony shows a lot of potential regarding the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI). Around 80 companies currently have AI offerings in their portfolio, the Fraunhofer Institute for the Development of Adaptive Systems IIS/EAS in Dresden announced on Monday. For the study "Artificial Intelligence - Competencies and Innovation Potential in Saxony," the research institute highlighted how companies and research are positioned in the field of AI and also what obstacles they face.
According to the study, the companies are located mainly in the conurbations of Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz. In addition, 24 Saxon university faculties and 23 research institutions are working on AI methods. The study sees the lack of skilled workers as the biggest hurdle. Many of the research institutions lack sufficient personnel to conduct research on or with AI technologies, the study found. In addition, there was a lack of jointly usable test fields and laboratories.
"With its excellently positioned research landscape and a high-performance economy with many agile small and medium-sized companies, Saxony has the best prerequisites for establishing and expanding AI competencies," the state's Minister of Science, Sebastian Gemkow of the Christian Democrats (CDU) said. AI will find its way into almost all areas of life. However, the minister emphasized that this would require strategic decisions, both legal and political.
