In the first three quarters of the year, more companies with greater economic significance were founded in Germany than the previous year. At 94,200, the number was 0.4 percent higher than a year ago, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Wednesday. The authority expects 124,000 new companies to be founded in the whole of 2019. That would be 1 percent more than in 2018, when it is estimated 100,000 companies were founded.
By definition, a business is of greater economic importance if it is founded by a legal entity or a company. Companies belonging to individual people are counted if they are founded by someone who is a registered tradesperson, employs people or is personally registered in the commercial register.
On the other hand, there are still a large number of small and part-time businesses. If these are included, then 519,700 commercial enterprises were registered in the first nine months, an increase of 1.5 percent over the same period last year. This was offset by 454,900 deregistrations, a decline of 2.1 per cent.
