China Yangzhong well demonstrates integrated industrial & city dev. amid global energy transformation

October 17, 2019

Abstract : Yangzhong, an island city situated in east China's Jiangsu Province and better known as a "green energy island in China", is demonstrating how latest green energy application and high-quality city development well integrate in a city amid the global energy transformation.

NANJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Yangzhong, an island city situated in east China's Jiangsu Province and better known as a "green energy island in China", is demonstrating how latest green energy application and high-quality city development well integrate in a city amid the global energy transformation.

On Wednesday, the Second International Green Energy Development Conference (IGEDC) themed on global green energy application and urban high-quality development was held in the city, attracting officials, experts and entrepreneurs from home and abroad in the field to gather there and explore and showcase the latest technologies and practical cases in green energy application.

-- Green energy presents advantageous development amid global energy transformation

Currently, green energy, or clean energy, has achieved notable development around the world and energy supply and consumption transformation towards a path featuring green and sustainable development is broadly deemed as an inevitable trend.

Xu Yuchang, Chairman and President of China Economic Information Service (CEIS) of Xinhua News Agency, said in his speech to the conference that visionary people and responsible countries in the world are attaching greater importance to green energy development, and the green energy industry's future will be even brighter.

On the Wednesday-held Second IGEDC, the Annual Development Report of Global Green Energy Applications released by CEIS showed that global power generation by renewable energy or green energy in a narrow sense reached about one third of total power installed capacity worldwide in 2018.

The data told that green energy has become an important global power source, with power generated by renewable energy predicted in the report to satisfy about 80 percent of gross power demand worldwide and solar and wind power generation to account for 52 percent of total electricity generation by 2050.

Green energy development is gaining momentum. Around the world, 65 countries and regions set 100 percent green power targets by end 2018, an increase of eight from the comparable data by end 2017. A total of 135 countries and regions mapped out policies and regulations on power generation and consumption to support green energy development. In the transportation sector, 70 nations and regions rolled out policies to propel faster application of green traffic technologies including new energy vehicles. 44 countries and regions formulated carbon pricing or transaction policies.

-- Promising B&R green energy cooperation eyed

As an important means to combat global climate change, green energy is reckoned as a reliable channel to build the green Belt and Road and advance international cooperation in green energy field. Giving full display to advantages of related countries in green energy resources and technologies is helpful for sustainable development of global energy supply and consumption.

As the Belt and Road countries and regions generally boast abundant clean energy resources and most of them have proposed development goals and policies on clean energy development, Belt and Road-related international cooperation in green energy field boasts great potential, said Li Yue, Vice President of CEIS, on the Belt and Road International Green Energy Cooperation Forum of the Second IGEDC Wednesday.

Sinava Souphanouvong, Vice Minister of Ministry of Energy and Mines of Laos, said that Lao government is interested in creating the model of green nation and has conveyed special attention on bilateral relation with the Chinese government especially on the Belt and Road Initiative.

As Sinava Souphanouvong introduced, the Chinese government as well as energy developers have put their tireless afford to assist Laos in terms of economic and social development. For instance, most infrastructure system in Laos have been developed by developers from China specially hydropower, entertainment facility, railway, and among others.

On Wednesday, CEIS released on the Belt and Road International Green Energy Cooperation Forum the "Report on Belt and Road Green Energy Investment Environment (2019)". According to the report, burgeoning power growth and inherent energy reform need in Belt and Road countries and regions become vital propelling elements for building the green Belt and Road, which provides tremendous development opportunities for global green energy companies.

For instance, a PV module plant jointly invested by Chinese PV producer Jiangsu Seraphim Solar System Co., Ltd., ILB Helios and IDC in South Africa entered into operation in August 2018. By crafting smart workshops integrated with the Internet of Things technology, the plant brings intelligent manufacturing technology to Africa.

In December 2016, Trina Solar Limited put into production its 700MW high-efficiency solar cells manufacturing program in Vietnam. Targeting markets in Europe, America and Japan as well, the project created nearly 1,000 jobs and introduced advanced manufacturing technologies for the country.

-- Yangzhong, a Chinese sample for green energy application

Yangzhong is one of the cities demonstrating high-proportion renewable energy application in China. For years, the city is known for its advantageous development of PV industry and relatively competitive PV industrial fundamental and industrial chains.

In the city, traditional PV applications can be seen everywhere. For instance, roof PV modules are widely applied on the roof of residential, office and factory buildings. The city built a zero carbon park in Binjiang wetland park, where new PV application including a PV bridge, PV umbrellas, PV charging car sheds, road lights powered by PV modules and wind power sets, and PV charging seats are shown to visitors with harmonious integration of solar power application and natural scenery.

Apart from these, a grid side energy storage power station, usually nicknamed urban ultra-large charger bank, was put into operation in Yangzhong, making clean energy consumption much more convenient than the past.

Zhang Dejun, Mayor of Yanghzhong City said on the press conference for the second IGEDC that the city has taken green gross domestic product (GDP) as its objective to guide city development and by adjusting industrial energy consumption structure, the city realized smooth shift between old and new economic drivers and turned its ecological advantages into development advantages.

By the end of 2018, Yangzhong saw its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of regional gross domestic product (GDP) down to 0.1616 ton of standard coal equivalent from 0.2094 ton of standard coal equivalent in 2016. (Contributed by Duan Jing, duanjing@xinhua.org)
