MILAN, Sep 18 (Class Editori) – There is a link between the Puglia Region and China, but it is still insufficient. "Although Puglia has many sectors that can find collaborations with the People's Republic for both exports and imports, the balance of payments is still negative," explained Leonardo Patroni Griffi, president of the Banca Popolare di Puglia e Basilicata, on Class Cnbc Linea Mercati, to present the conference on 20 September 2019 "The New Silk Road: an opportunity for companies from the Puglia Region" organized by the credit institution in collaboration with Class Editori.
Exports, explained Patroni Griffi, amount to about 50 million euros, while imports are around 100 million. "I think the value of this initiative, strongly desired by the bank, is aimed at increasing opportunities for innovation. I have to highlight that Puglia has among the sectors of interest mechatronics, nanotechnologies, agrifood and renewable energies".
The president of Banca Popolare di Puglia e Basilicata also recalled the geographical location of the Region capable of intercepting the Belt and Road project both via the sea route – which passes through the Suez Canal – and by the land route – as it is in the so-called Corridor 8, along a west-east line in south-eastern Europe, linking the transport flows of the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea with those involving the Black Sea.
Looking at the opportunities for companies from the Puglia Region, Patroni Griffi highlighted the importance that renewable energies play in the regional productive fabric. "Puglia exports renewable energies to other Italian regions, such as wind and photovoltaics, sectors in which China is very strong".
However, the most dynamic sector for what concerns trade with the People's Republic is the manufacturing, in particular the furniture export. In general, Italian National Institute of Statistics data shows that in the first half of 2019, there was a sustained increase in sales on foreign markets by companies from the Puglia region, with an increase of 10.01% since it places Puglia “among the first 5 regions that are more dynamic in Italy and among those driving the South that, overall, show an increase of 2.5% ", stated Mino Borraccino, regional councilor for economic development.
The arrival of the TAP on the regional coasts is also strategic. The Trans-Adriatic pipeline that brings gas from the Azerbaijan to Italy is linked with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline, the other major work on the Silk Road.
