Mr. Weerasak Wangsuphakijkosol, deputy minister of Thailand's Ministry of Commerce (MOC), will visit Surat Thani and relevant cooperatives, and meet with farmers on September 19-20, seeking to facilitate cooperatives and farmers in using the preferential rights policy of FTA.
On September 19, 2019, the deputy minister and his delegation will visit Ban Na San Agricultural Cooperative Ltd. in Ban Na San, where they will meet with farmers. The cooperative is a fruit gathering center for its members, mainly rambutan and banana bound for ASEAN, China, and other international markets. The delegation will also visit Tatong Plain Shrimp Farmers Co-Operatives Ltd. in Kanchanadit. The cooperative is the major production place of white shrimp bound for home and overseas markets, with export markets including US, Japan, Canada, and EU.
On September 20, 2019, the deputy minister will preside over a seminar themed "The preparations of Thai cooperatives in coping with trade liberalization" for cooperative members in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chumphon, Krabi, and Phang Nga. The seminar will be hosted to spread knowledge related to the use of the preferential rights policy of FTA, boost Thai cooperatives in expanding foreign markets, and generate long-term, stable income for farmers and Thai enterprises.
Ms. Onmon Subthawitham, director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) of the Ministry of Commerce revealed that at the seminar, thematic discussion titled "using the preferential rights policy of FTA to arm Thai cooperatives" and "enhancing the competitive edge of Thai cooperatives amid global trade liberalization" will be launched. Besides, at the seminar, an expert team of trade and marketing will analyze relevant products and recommend suitable export markets for the cooperatives. The deputy minister believes that the implementation of the project will benefit both cooperatives and farmers, and facilitate farmers in using the preferential rights policy of FTAs signed between Thailand and other countries, particularly ASEAN and China.
